Letter: Put brakes on military action

By Kenneth Alexander, Camas

Unlike his Republican colleagues in the Senate and House who continually seek new ways to expand executive power and privilege, Republican Sen. Todd Young of Indiana has been studying the Constitution and made the startling discovery that Article I, Section 8 explicitly states that Congress has sole authority to declare war.

For this reason, Young is requesting that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo promise that his leader in the White House will consult with Congress before intervening militarily in Venezuela. To that end Young is also pushing for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to schedule an immediate hearing to discuss the apparent desire by Pompeo’s boss to use military force in South America to satisfy his latest twitch.

Write to Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray and tell them to support Sen. Young’s demands before we see our nation’s ever-expanding military actions spill into this hemisphere.
