Weather Eye: Another cool day before things warm up

There were a few scattered showers Monday around the county as of 5 p.m. but nothing as heavy as we had over the weekend. Saturday evening Vancouver measured .27 of an inch and on Sunday we had .38 of an inch. That helped catch us up a bit, but as of 5 p.m. Monday Vancouver was still three-quarters of an inch below average in the rainfall department.

The chance of showers decreases today as weak high pressure builds over us. It will still be cool today but warmer the remainder of the week with highs Wednesday through Friday in the 70s.

Now the holiday weekend. The weather pattern is remaining complex and making for a slight bit of anxiety for weather forecasters predicting the long holiday weekend.

I must chuckle and maybe cry a little, too, as I have watched the forecast models go from showery conditions to dry and warm in Sunday’s charts and then Tuesday, they throw a chance of showers Friday through Sunday.

I suspect the models will continue to change tunes for a couple days before landing on an iron clad solution.

Overall, I’m hoping the three-day weekend will be pleasant for everyone. Continue with your outdoor plans and we will take another look at the forecast on Thursday.

Forest officials, in anticipation of a bad wildfire year, are taking as many precautions as possible and getting ready for above average temperatures and below average rain. We really do not get that much rain in the summer months, anyway. With continued month after month below average rainfall, we can at home begin to utilize conservative measures for outdoor watering and planting activities.

Good thing we had that rainfall over the weekend. Last year at this time we had only .11 of an inch of rain for the month. Is this our new normal? Perhaps, time will tell. Over the years in climate records you can see the weather goes in cycles. It will take awhile longer to see if we really are in a major climate shift.
