The National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive held May 11 netted 122,405 pounds of food in Clark County.

That included 103,648 pounds of food within Vancouver city limits. Though the amount of food collected was down this year, cash donations were up. Don Young, the local organizer, said Clark County residents donated $5,122.

“This is a tremendous amount for us,” he said.

Donation envelopes were mailed to P.O. boxes and businesses to solicit funds.

The National Association of Letter Carriers claims that for every $1 donated, 12 pounds of food can be purchased. If that’s accurate, Young said, the total amount of food is up this year. Food collected for the Clark County Food Bank during the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will last partway through the summer, Young said. It’s the second largest single-day food drive in Clark County behind December’s Walk & Knock.

Young said he’s appreciative of the volunteers who came out to pick up food donations on May 11.
