Letter: Democrats offer solutions

By Ken Simpson, Vancouver
Published: May 28, 2019, 6:00am

Given that Republicans have no agenda other than more tax cuts for the wealthy, their only recourse is to lie about the Democratic agenda. The lie we’ll be hearing is that Democrats are socialists.

It’s true, the urgency of income inequality, climate change and health care has caused Democrats to propose robust government intervention. Republicans want pure capitalism with little or no government intervention. Democrats want a mixture of capitalist and socialist elements.

Raw, unencumbered capitalism has created an America of haves and have-nots. It’s changed global climate patterns and has taken health care hostage. Most of the Democratic candidates are proposing efforts to regulate or modify capitalism on behalf of human dignity and a clean planet. That’s exactly what Democrats have done since Franklin Roosevelt proposed Social Security and a New Deal.

Because Republicans have always fought against attempts to regulate capitalism, they will mobilize once again to attack the efforts of Democrats. It will be no different than Ronald Reagan’s claim in 1961 that Medicare would be the road to a socialist dictatorship.

If you believe that Republicans are the chief defenders of people with pre-existing conditions, then vote for the lie.
