A woman died after she was hit by a tractor-trailer rig Sunday night on Interstate 5 in Vancouver.

Crews were dispatched to the scene in the freeway’s northbound lanes near East 39th Street at 7:58 p.m. The woman was pronounced dead after crews arrived, Vancouver Fire Department spokesman Kevin Stromberg said.

A bulletin from the Washington State Patrol said the Gilbert Louis Crowell, 59, of Portland was driving a Volvo tractor-trailer rig north on the freeway when a woman walked into his lane and was struck. The woman’s name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Northbound traffic was diverted to state Highway 500 as crews remained on scene late Sunday. Washington State Patrol is investigating the incident.
