Holland America Flowers, a family-owned flower grower in Woodland, earned a special designation called a BloomCheck because of positive business practices including efficient energy use, water conservation, biological pest management and employee care.

The company earned the designation after an audit from nonprofit company Protected Harvest.

Owner Benno Dobbe said that he credits his son and COO Ben Dobbe with leading the certification effort. Benno’s daughter Nicolette Dobbe also works at the family business.

Benno Dobbe started the business in 1980 after he emigrated from the Netherlands. He specializes in growing lilies, tulips, freesias, snapdragons, peonies. The company employs 120 full-time workers and 75 part-time workers in the tulip season.
