LONGVIEW — The man shot in his South Kelso home Tuesday evening remained in critical condition at PeaceHealth Southwest Washington Medical Center on Thursday morning, according to a hospital spokesman.

Law enforcement officers are still searching for his shooter, Cowlitz County Sheriff Brad Thurman said Thursday. Deputies have not yet identified a person of interest, he said, although the community is not believed to be at heightened risk.

“At this point we don’t have any information that the public at large is endangered,” Thurman said. “There have been no other events like this recently in the area … which would lead us to believe it was a specific targeting of the victim in this case.”

Thurman said investigators haven’t determined a motive and remain “open to all possibilities.”

According to the sheriff’s office, an intruder shot 69-year-old Rick Huckaby in an apparent act of random violence while Huckaby was at his home in the 1400 block of South Fourth Avenue.

Investigators say Huckaby did not know his assailant, who is described as a bearded white male with frizzy gray hair and standing about 5 feet, 5 inches tall.

Thurman said deputies hope Huckaby will soon be well enough to give them more information. The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information or video evidence to contact its office at 360-577-3092.

The shooting took place at about 7:15 p.m. Deputies and officers from other agencies used a police dog and a drone to search the area, but they were unable to locate the suspect, according to the sheriff’s office.

The family has requested to have no contact with the media, according to the sheriff’s office.
