ALBANY, Ore. — A stomach virus outbreak in Linn County has caused district officials to close school for the rest of the week.

The Greater Albany Public School District said in a news release that it had already planned to close Periwinkle Elementary School on Monday. School records showed the elementary school’s attendance on Friday was especially low, with many staff and students out due to the stomach virus. On Monday, district staff said other schools had a similar jump in absences, with many parents keeping their children home to keep them from getting exposed to the illness.

The district warned students and staff to stay home for at least 48 hours after symptoms of the stomach virus end. Coupled with the shortened week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, district officials said they decided on Monday it would be best to close schools for the rest of the week.

Symptoms of the stomach virus have included vomiting, diarrhea, fever, headaches, chills, sore throat, cough and congestion.

The district office will be open until Wednesday, and cleaning teams will be disinfecting and sanitizing the school during the closure.
