Letter: Stand up to abuses

Since Jaime Herrera Beutler never holds public meetings, this feels like the next best option to gain her ear.

Her opposition to the impeachment hearings based on her stated indignation of the intelligence committee’s procedural process is disingenuous at best. It is incumbent on the Republican Party, not the Democratic Party, to regulate the behavior of its members to ensure that they perform their duties within the confines of the law and behave in a moral and ethical manner. If a political party self-regulates, then the opposition will have difficulty denigrating it. In other words: Set the standard.

For three years, he has obstructed investigations into his office, violated the Emoluments Clause, allowed foreign influence into our election with impunity, attacked the free press, lied repeatedly, and now allegedly coerced the Ukrainian government to provide fodder on a political opponent. For three years, Herrera Beutler has done nothing to curb these abuses.

Impeachment should never be taken lightly. However, it can be an effective safeguard against abuses of power. It is a shame that it has come to this.

Herrera Beutler has had it easy during her time in office, voting along party lines and echoing party rhetoric. It is time to show some leadership. Madame Congresswoman, do your job!
