Letter: Protect rights of both parties

A Ph.D. writer of a letter to the editor suggested that a two-party system is not called for in the Constitution and that the Republican Party should be eliminated for the good of the nation (“Herrera Beutler, GOP need to go,” Our Readers’ Views, Nov. 13).

The writer stated that the Republicans in Congress are all “liars” and that President Trump is a “dictator.” There could be some debate as to whether the Ph.D. identified the correct party to be eliminated. Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff had publicly stated for several years that he had evidence of President Trump colluding with Russia, but that evidence was nowhere to be found.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s argument about the “process” of the impeachment hearing being a circus is very valid. The Constitution does promise “equal protection under the law” and that process has not taken place on behalf of President Trump throughout this entire impeachment process so far.

So the writer wants the Republican Party to be eliminated rather than allow them to have the same rights as the Democrats in the process of trying to impeach the president. Are we in the United States of America, or are we living in China, Cuba or North Korea, where opposition parties are eliminated by any means necessary and equal rights are nonexistent?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
