Letter: Campaign transparency is needed

By Susan M. Taylor, Vancouver
Published: October 5, 2019, 6:00am

This is in reference to a letter to the editor by Karen McNeil, “Take the money out of campaigning” (Our Readers’ Views, July 11), relating to campaign financing. She recommends as a solution to our current system, a system where campaigns would be publicly funded. This is a terrible idea. With politicians gerrymandering election districts to choose their voters, do we really need them deciding who gets campaign funding, too?

The solution is to limit how much corporations and individuals can contribute and to be able to see (transparency) who and how much is contributed to each campaign be it the individual campaign, a political action committee or some other path to the support the candidate. How we get there is harder than one would think.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
