Holiday hiring kicks into high gear

Retailers, delivery firms announce plans to swell ranks

‘Tis the season for holiday hiring. While holiday season jobs are not as plentiful as they once were, there are still some opportunities to put some jingle in your pocket to help with holiday bills.

Both retailers and package delivery companies are hiring in October for work during the holidays.

Here’s a look at some jobs you can pick up.

Macy’s

Macy’s, the department store known for its holiday parade on Thanksgiving, holds its national hiring day on Oct. 24. Those interested can apply at Macy’s stores from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Macy’s said it is hiring a total of 80,000 seasonal workers — about the same as last year.

Before the hiring day, interested job seekers can apply at macysJOBS.com or bloomingdalesJOBS.com, where they also can see seasonal jobs listed.

Pay is hourly and varies according to the position and location, Macy’s said. But seasonal colleagues qualify for a 20 percent merchandise discount on most purchases at Macy’s.

Target

Kicking the trend on lower in-store hiring is Target, which announced it plans to add even more jobs for the 2019 holiday season than it did last year: 125,000 in-store workers. Positions start at $13 an hour or more, the Minneapolis-based retailer said.

Those interested in a seasonal job with Target can stop in any store from Oct. 11-13 and Nov. 2-3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Target lists all its seasonal positions in one place: https://jobs.target.com/seasonal.

UPS

The delivery service, which sees its package volume swell from November through January, plans to hire 100,000 workers for the holidays. “We expect another record peak season this year, with daily package deliveries nearly doubling compared to our average of 20 million per day,” said Jim Barber, chief operating officer, in a news release.

Pay ranges from $13 to $30 an hour, he said.

Applicants must be able to lift and carry packages that typically weigh 25 to 35 pounds, and may weigh up to 70 pounds, according to an Indeed.com job posting for “driver helper.”

Those interested should apply at www.upsjobs.com.

Holiday work at UPS also has perks: Seasonal employees who are students can earn up to $1,300 toward college expenses, in addition to their hourly pay, for three months of continuous employment. See if you qualify for UPS’ the company’s Earn and Learn program at jobs-ups.com under “students.”

Stepping stone toward full time?

For those who are seeking a full-time job, seasonal work can help you get your foot in the door at a company, career experts say.

Macy’s says that nearly one-third of its leadership started their careers at Macy’s during the holiday season. In 2018, more than 8,000 seasonal colleagues joined the company permanently after the holiday season.

UPS said that 35 percent of the people UPS hired for seasonal package handler jobs over the last three years were later hired in a permanent position.
