Union soccer player Maya Woods is Week 5 fall sports prep athlete of the week

Woods beat out La Center's Grotte for honor

Maya Woods of Union girls soccer is the The Columbian fall sports prep athlete of the week for the week ending Oct. 12.

Woods beat out Hailey Grotte of La Center girls swimming for the honor.

Woods had two goals and one assist in two big league wins last week for Union.

Winners of athlete of the week may not be nominated again until the postseason. Individual nominations are limited to one per month.

The other nominees

  • ABBY CUMMINS, KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN VOLLEYBALL: Cummins had 63 assists, 20 digs and 11 kills in two wins for the first-place Knights.
  • HAILEY GROTTE, LA CENTER GIRLS SWIMMING: Grotte won the 50 and 100 freestyles in state-qualifying times at the Kelso Invitational.
  • JONATHAN HUTLEY, SKYVIEW BOYS TENNIS: Hutley scored straight-set wins over Akash Prasad of Camas and Kyle Mosier of Union in matchups of top players in the 4A GSHL.
  • GRAHAM MOODY, MOUNTAIN VIEW BOYS GOLF: Moody shot a 2-under-par 142 to win the 3A district title by 12 shots.
