PORTLAND — The parents of a missing University of Portland freshman said on Monday that they believe a body found near the St. Johns Bridge belongs to their son, Owen Klinger.

Dustin and Mary Klinger issued a written statement Monday afternoon, saying Portland police had notified them that they found a body in Northwest Portland.

“Portland police have notified us that they have recovered a body that we believe is our son, Owen Klinger,” the statement said. “We deeply appreciate the extraordinary effort and support that thousands of people have provided over the past two weeks. We now ask for privacy as we move forward with our healing process.”

Police reported on Monday that they found a body Sunday afternoon in the water off Northwest St. Helens Road, and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office river patrol recovered the body. Police have not yet confirmed that the body belongs to Klinger.

Klinger, 18, went missing Oct. 6, after he was last seen leaving his dorm at the University of Portland around 7:50 p.m. that Sunday evening. Video footage from TriMet captured a man, believed to be Klinger, walking west on North Willamette Boulevard, toward St. Johns.

In the weeks he was missing, Klinger’s family and friends turned out in droves to search for him. Hundreds gathered at least four times to scour Portland parks, green spaces and neighborhoods, and held a vigil at the University of Portland.
