Weather Eye: Clearing skies are heading our direction

Rain was on tap for early this morning but the weather front is fast moving so we will see clearing skies and partly sunny weather later this afternoon. And as promised we have a couple of nice days Wednesday and Thursday.

We are on the warm side of the jet stream so we will see highs in the 60s maybe close to 70 here and there before another cold front drops southward on Friday. This front will bring the cooler air to the north down over us and highs drop back in the 50s for the weekend. Only a slight chance of showers with that front, at least for now.

With clearing skies, we could see areas of frost this weekend in the colder locations. So, once again we have a taste of early October the next couple of days then a taste of early November. And looking at the calendar, that isn’t that far away. First, we get past Halloween.

Monday the rain belt was just north of Clark County, where steady rain fell. It was wet and windy along the Washington Coast. That band of rain will be the rain that falls early today. Freezing levels are high enough that the rain will stay in that form in the mountains. Timberline had 2 feet of snow the past several days but snow changed to rain on Sunday.

They did manage to open a couple of ski runs for a taste of winter. The cold front coming Friday ensures snow in the mountains down to pass levels if there is enough moisture. We go from warm high pressure the next few days into cool high pressure. At least rainfall will be minimal.

We slipped back into below-average rainfall Monday here in Vancouver and that will continue to be the case through this coming weekend. We will see what the last week of October holds for us in Thursday’s column. Enjoy the next couple of sunny and warm days.
