Weather Eye: Pumpkin-picking weather will be ideal for weekend

The delightful weather today and Friday will change to more like late fall as high temperatures fall from the 60s to the mid-50s. Overnight lows over the weekend will go into the 30s, and frost is likely early next week, possibly to Halloween.

A weak weather system drops down from the north on Friday with mainly clouds and little in the way of rainfall. Only sprinkles or a brief light shower is expected at most. It will usher in easterly winds and cooler temperatures over the weekend.

After the small chance of rain Friday night, I expect the weather to remain dry all the way to Halloween. Vancouver’s rainfall so far this month is 1.95 inches. The month will be much cooler and drier than average when midnight on Oct. 31 rolls around.

Nine years ago today I was writing about a powerful Pacific storm on our doorstep.  The coast had 50 to 60 mph winds coupled with 30-foot swells and astronomically high tides with coastal flooding along the Washington Coast. The Cascades had 3-4 feet of snow.

We have nothing like that heading our way anytime soon. Makes me wonder when autumn and winter storms will begin. The 2 feet of snow at Timberline will likely be mostly gone by the weekend. The old weather saying about the Cascades says, “October snows may come and go but November snows stay and grow.”

If you haven’t been to the pumpkin patch, this weekend’s weather will be great. Enjoy the next days of sunny and dry weather. East winds are coming.
