Letter: Development never ends

By Eugene Dombrowski, Vancouver
Published: September 15, 2019, 6:00am

When you were young, you were unconcerned about your development. Chances are you were pleased with the toys your parents gave you, and your parents were happy with your progress. Society was meant to take responsibility for your development, and provide you with your education. It wasn’t until your teenage years that you began to take personal responsibility for your development, leading to things such as marriage, employment and your children.

One would think that you would be comfortable as you aged, but the proliferation of retreat centers for adults, whose purpose is the business of discovering “truth,” suggests otherwise. These centers often offer mindfulness in an attempt to remove disturbing thoughts from the mind. But the solution is simple: It is to shift one’s focus from self to the welfare of those less fortunate than yourself. The thoughts regarding how best to help others will have no room for future thoughts of how best to further enrich oneself.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
