“It’s time to talk about national debt” appeared in The Columbian on Sept. 10. Unfortunately, our federal government rarely takes action on any problem until the problem is at the crisis stage. Isn’t $22.5 trillion a crisis?
Bipartisan politics should come into play here, but our two parties behave like immature, bickering children rather than carrying out their jobs of protecting our national security through fiscal responsibility. National debt can be reduced in several ways: Closing down our military bases in our allied countries, no maximum on social security payroll withholding and tightly controlling illegal immigration. These actions would be unpopular among some voters, but aren’t politicians supposed to make sound decisions and do the right thing? Or is their goal perpetual re-election?
