The fall collegiate tennis season has just begun. Thanks to Sammi Hampton, a big upset has already occurred.

The Arizona State senior from Skyview High knocked off the nation’s No. 26-ranked singles player at the Michigan Invitational last weekend in Ann Arbor. Hampton beat Chiara Lommer of Michigan in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

“Sammi did a fantastic job of composing herself and fighting back from 1-3 down in the third set to win the match,” associate head coach Matt Langley said.

Hampton went on to win a doubles match with partner Samantha Alicea, beating a tandem from Michigan State. Hampton and Alicea finished last season as the No. 85-ranked doubles team nationwide.

Hampton, who is thus far unranked, went to beat No. 116-ranked Cameron Course of Notre Dame 6-2, 6-1.

Though she lost her third singles match of the tournament, Hampton and Alicea went 3-0 in doubles play and will likely be one of the most formidable tandems in the Pac-12 this season.

Hampton has a career record of 77-19 in doubles and 59-36 in singles.

Arizona State will play an abbreviated fall schedule before taking a winter break. The NCAA schedule begins in earnest in late January.
