Letter: Hold elections as scheduled

I am writing in response to the article “Wyman asks Inslee to cancel April special elections” (The Columbian, March 19). Toying with elections is just a slippery slope to doing away with elections because of an “emergency.” Several states have plans to cancel primary elections. Dictators have suspended elections and declared themselves as permanent leaders without the citizens having any input into the decision.

Donald Trump has already shown us many things that are similar to pre-war Germany. He has mocked and belittled the free press and tried to silence it. He has tried to silence independent judges who issue decisions against him. He has removed people from his administration who weren’t willing to toe his line. Suspending any elections would just be another step in making Trump the dictator he would like to be. No matter what it takes, elections need to go forward. They are a vital part of the foundation of our freedom.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
