Letter: Bike owners should pay their way

We spent some time in Vancouver during this COVID-19 pandemic and walked each day in the neighborhoods to help with the boredom of staying in the house. It was quite surprising to see the number of cyclists that use the sidewalks to ride on instead of the bicycle lanes that were built for them with taxpayer money.

I didn’t see any license plates on the bicycles so I presume that they are not required and the riders don’t pay any fees to help support the rights of way that were constructed for them. I drive, so I pay automobile taxes, gas taxes, and fees for my license plates to support new highways and sidewalks. Maybe Vancouver should find a means to put bicycles on the street where they belong and have their owners pay to support the roads which they are not utilizing at the expense of the driving public.
