OSU reopening continues to spark debate

The big questions for fall in Corvallis are a) will Oregon State University reopen and b) what might that look like if it does?

Corvallis Mayor Biff Traber and several councilors noted at Monday’s City Council meeting that they have heard from dozens of constituents with questions about the issue.

City Manager Mark Shepard said that he will be meeting on that topic Wednesday with Steve Clark, OSU’s vice president for marketing and university relations, and Joe Kerby, top administrator for Benton County.

Shepard described the discussion as one that is “just starting.”

In addition the OSU Board of Trustees is holding a virtual meeting Aug. 14 with the reopening challenge one of the agenda items.

Traber indicated that the council should expect an agenda item on OSU reopening at its Aug. 17 session.

“Residents don’t feel safe,” said Council Charlyn Ellis, whose Ward 5 has the highest student population in the city.
