Letter: Remove Snake River dams

By Dolores Kueffler, Vancouver

I am very saddened by the decision not to breach the Snake River dams for the sake of salmon and orcas. This is another major choice for industry over environment. It is also another breach of our treaties with Native American tribes who have been promised those fishing rights into perpetuity. This is a part of their culture, not just a chance to go fishing as a recreation.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler heralded the decision as good science. Supporting whom? Salmon as a species in the Northwest are like the “canary in the coal mine.” We are choosing the human race over other species’ right to exist. At some point it will backfire as the chain of life is broken, and what we need for our survival will not be there. Clearly it is time for a change in leadership and representation for our region before its to late.
