PORTLAND — The Southwest Portland home of a former, long-time instructor for Evergreen Public Schools was recently placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Steiner log home, known as Fogelbo, is owned by Ross Fogelquist. Located on Southwest Oleson Road, the home was built in 1940 for Swedish immigrants, according to a news release provided by Fogelquist. Henry Steiner, a craftsman who built Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, and his son, John Steiner, built the home. Fogelquist’s parents bought the home in 1952. Fogelquist taught German and Swedish classes in Vancouver for 35 years, between 1965 and 2000, at Evergreen and Mountain View high schools. Fogelbo, which stands for birds nest in Swedish, has been the host of numerous Scandinavian, German and Austrian cultural celebrations. Fogelquist is the former honorary Swedish vice-consul for Oregon and has lived at the home since his parents purchased it. “It has been very important to me that my unique log home be preserved for future generations,” Fogelquist said. “This incredible residence has been a very significant part of my life for nearly 70 years.”
