Oregon reported the smallest jump in coronavirus cases Monday in a month, with state officials announcing 227 confirmed or likely new cases and one new death.

It’s unclear what, if anything, Monday’s modest decline means, given that ups and downs in the numbers are normal. Last week, for example, cases jumped from just under 270 Thursday to more than 420 Friday.

The daily total is the lowest since July 8, when the state wrapped up a three-day streak of relatively low numbers.

Overall, the data show a gradual drop in average cases per week since the all-time high July 30. The current weekly average – 303 cases per day – is four-and-a-half times as high as it was May 15, the day Governor Kate Brown started lifting her March stay-at-home order in select counties.

Where the new cases are by county: Baker (2), Clackamas (10), Columbia (1), Crook (2), Deschutes (7), Hood River (2), Jackson (8), Jefferson (11), Lane (5), Lincoln (2), Linn (3), Malheur (21), Marion (27), Morrow (15), Multnomah (45), Polk (6), Umatilla (15), Washington (37) and Yamhill (8).

New fatalities: Oregon’s 357th death linked to the coronavirus is an 88-year-old Multnomah County man with underlying conditions. He tested positive July 29 and died August 5 at his home.

The prevalence of infections: State officials reported results for 13,010 tests since Friday, the day detailed information was last available. Since then, 823 people tested positive, equaling a 6.3% positivity rate.

Who got infected: State officials last reported detailed information about new cases Friday. Since then, the agency reported new cases among the following age groups: 0-9 (53); 10-19 (92); 20-29 (187); 30-39 (150); 40-49 (141); 50-59 (105); 60-69 (59); 70-79 (35); 80 and older (32).

Who’s in the hospital: The state Monday reported 152 Oregonians with confirmed coronavirus infections are currently in the hospital, up seven from Friday, and 20 patients are on ventilators, up four from Friday. Hundreds of hospital beds and ventilators available, including about 950 adult beds for both intensive care and regular hospital care.

Since it began: Oregon has reported 21,488 confirmed or presumed infections and 357 deaths, among the lowest totals in the nation. To date, 449,629 Oregonians have been tested.
