Letter: Congregate responsibly

We have the right to gather for religious purposes, but let’s lead by example and do it responsibly. As a Christian, I understand the longing to be back in person with a support system of like-minded individuals. Online services just aren’t the same.

Since July, several churches in the Portland/Vancouver area have begun to reopen their doors for Sunday services. However, I have been disheartened to see that many of those churches are currently not doing enough to help stop the spread of COVID-19. While I deeply understand the need for fellowship in person, I also deeply believe that we all have a moral obligation to help and protect others at the same time.

That being said, I began searching for churches in the area that are gathering safely. I was pleased to see that Summit View Church in Vancouver, which reopened July 12, has new COVID-19 restrictions in place. They conduct outdoor-only services with social distancing, provide hand sanitizer and require masks.

Regardless of whether I try Summit View in the future, I believe all churches should be doing what they can to protect others. So let’s mask up and congregate responsibly.
