Letter: Services for a lucky few

I was shocked to learn from Dawn Woolcott’s letter (“Celebrate Election Day” Our Readers’ Views, Aug. 10) that our fire department, police and military all lose money! If they cannot generate a good profit, why would any patriotic Trumpista support them with our hard-earned tax dollars?

The obvious solution is to privatize them, along with the sad U.S. Postal Service, like we have done with many of our prisons, much of our health care system and the entire pharmaceutical insurance industry, producing fabulous wealth for a lucky few (why not you, too?).

These fine institutions make billions, and if they can do it, so can a privately run military (where is Blackwater when you need them?), for-hire police and a pay-as-you-go fire department (but volunteers are suckers, of course). Call your favorite Congressperson and demand this change! If they have an “R” next to their names, they should be all-in (Jaime, you are with me, right?).

Of course, if they’re of the dreaded Democrat Party (poor you), they probably think the U.S. Postal Service and other money-losers should be a public service, supported by you (and me). Fat chance! Smart people (and stable geniuses) don’t pay taxes at all. That’s for losers!

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
