Letter: Crack down on violent protesters

By Stev Dieringer, Vancouver

When did it become not offensive to have cops injured during any protest? The media raises a hurt cry when a “mostly” peaceful protester stubs a toe, but cackles when law enforcement officers are blinded/impacted by lasers/debris “brought to protest.”

Law enforcement officers have a job they were hired in good faith to do. Consciously removing officers’ nonlethal tools does what? Tips the playing field to further advantage the “mostly peaceful” protesters (whose favored tactic is mob ambush). Doesn’t this make law enforcement officers paid targets?

If protesters will not police themselves with the radicals camouflaged among them, they become as culpable as the rioters and subject to arrest/prosecution. Elected politicians who will not stand behind the people they have hired to enforce laws deserve neither respect nor any special protection. Without nonlethal tools decisions are easier: resistance equals a lethal response; protesters can say “My life was jeopardized!”
