Mariners trade Camas High grad Taylor Williams to Padres

Relief pitcher converted six of seven save opportunities for Seattle

The Mariners and Padres weren’t quite done following Sunday night’s seven-player exchange.

Just ahead of Monday afternoon’s deadline, Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto and San Diego general manager A.J. Preller made one more deal that will send Mariners reliever Taylor Williams to California. Dipoto confirmed the trade on Monday’s ROOT Sports broadcast.

The Mariners will receive a player to be named later or cash considerations for their reliable back end reliever, the club announced in a statement.

Seattle never appointed a closer this season, but Williams, a 29-year-old right-hander, often handled those duties, collecting a team-high six saves.

The Camas High School product posted a 5.93 ERA in 14 appearances with Seattle this season, but that number is skewed by a five-run outing in San Diego last week. Williams held opponents scoreless in 11 of his 14 outings with Seattle and struck out 19 while walking seven.

During his brief stint with the Mariners after being acquired from the Brewers during spring training back in February, Williams also became the franchise’s all-time saves leader among Washington-born pitchers. With his sixth save against the Rangers earlier this month, he passed Karl Best (five from 1985-86), who was born in Aberdeen and attended Kent Meridian High School, as the career leader.

Williams was also closing in on the organization’s saves record among former Washington prep pitchers, and was tied with Interlake’s Larry Anderson (six from 1981-82), and trailing only Kennewick’s Russ Swan (11 from 1991-92) before he was traded.

This was the third and final deal the Mariners made ahead of the deadline.

Seattle sent catcher Austin Nola and relievers Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla on Sunday night in exchange for Padres top outfield prospect Taylor Trammell, as well as three more young players in infielder Ty France, catcher Luis Torrens and reliever Andres Munoz, who all have major league experience.

The Mariners also traded Taijuan Walker to the Blue Jays last week for a player to be named later last week.
