Letter: Tailor information to region

I really enjoyed seeing the Dec. 11 listing on the front of the classifieds related to the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s Great American Bird Count. I am not a committed birder myself, but I know a little about birds and one thing that struck me was that the birds featured are either not found in the Pacific Northwest or are very rarely found here. Specifically, the Northern Cardinal is not found the western United States at all.

I love seeing articles about getting people involved in efforts like this that serve the dual purpose of engaging folks in their natural environment and aid in the collection of scientific data. I think it would be helpful, though, if the information provided were tailored to our region (especially when it comes to wildlife).
