UNIVERSITY PLACE — In some ways, it might’ve seen fitting the Class 2A/1A state bowling team title came down to the same two teams — W.F. West and Columbia River — that also went neck-and-neck at last week’s 2A Southwest District tournament.

A week after capturing its first district title, W.F. West captured its inaugural state title, too, edging the Chieftains Friday at Narrows Plaza Bowl by 74 pins, but not without the Chieftains rallying in the 14-game baker format to cut a once-247-pin deficit to under 40.

“We were really on fire,” Chieftains coach Logan Burnett said. “Our girls were just lighting it up. We just had a great day today.”

River placed second at state for the second time in three seasons. In fact, the 2A Southwest District had all three of its teams place in the top four Friday. R.A. Long (6704) finished fourth.

At districts last week, W.F. West used a strong baker-game performance to pull away from River, 3997-3732. Friday, though, Columbia River closed its deficit using big scores on baker games. It entered the day trailing W.F. West by 247 pins following Thursday’s six traditional games, but rolled three baker games of 190 pins or higher, including a 213 game, through nine bakers. It trailed W.F. West by 51 pins entering the 10th baker game.

Burnett couldn’t help but keep watch of what in-district rival W.F. West as his team continued to trim its large deficit.

“I knew it was going to be hard to come back on them,” the coach said. “They’re just a strong team.”
