Letter: Leave choices to community

The new rules around sex education in the state are concerning for the strength of our community.

The community of the Battle Ground school district and the school board came to a decision that it was not necessary to have comprehensive sex ed as a requirement for all students. After this choice was made, Washington state decided that they will require all school districts to have comprehensive sex ed as a requirement for all students as young as kindergarten.

As a community, the schools made a decision to not have this as a requirement. It is important for a community to have individual strength to make decisions that affect themselves. In this case, the state took the liberty of making a big decision and forcing it upon the school districts, after they had made their own individual choices about this topic.

The states don’t want the federal government overriding their major decisions, so the state shouldn’t be able to override the community’s decisions.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
