Squeeky Johnson’s rebound basket with 0.8 seconds left in overtime gave the Skyview boys basketball team a 59-57 win over Mount Rainier on Monday in Tacoma.

Skyview’s win in Monday’s bi-district loser-out game clinched a berth to the regional round of the state tournament. The Storm will play two more bi-district consolation games in Tacoma, starting Wednesday against either Kennedy Catholic or Federal Way.

Stuck in traffic, the Storm arrived later than expected to Wilson High School.

“We showed up about a half-hour late and just had to go,” Skyview coach Matt Gruhler said. “We looked like it early.”

But Skyview (17-7) found its rhythm in the fourth quarter, using a 10-0 run to take a two-point lead with two minutes to go.

Skyview’s Kyle Gruhler scored 24 points and had a shot to win the game in regulation, but his 3-pointer was off the mark.

The ball also went to Gruhler on the last possession of overtime. His 3-point attempt was off, as was Jace Chatman’s tip-in attempt. But Johnson also crashed toward the hoop, collecting Chatman’s miss for a close-range shot.

Matt Gruhler credited two recent overtime games (against Union in league play and Battle Ground in the bi-district tournament) with helping his team keep its poise.

“Even though we didn’t play great, we rallied,” the coach said. “Our guys weren’t rattled in overtime.”

Sean Boss took three charges, including one on a crucial possession with one minute left in regulation.

Ricky Bell scored 36 points for Mount Rainier (14-10).
