2 men arrested in 2009 Oregon murder

PORTLAND — Nearly 11 years after two people broke into a Clackamas County apartment and killed Joseph Patrick Haley, police have arrested two men.

Clackamas County Sheriff’s detectives said Thursday that they arrested Kevin Schwartz, 34, and George Robins, 38.

Schwartz was arrested Wednesday in Gresham and has been charged with first-degree murder, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported. Robins was arrested in Portland and faces second-degree murder charges.

An indictment says they were trying to rob Haley when they shot him.

According to the sheriff’s office, the two men broke into Haley’s unit at the Willow Creek Apartments in unincorporated Clackamas County on March 20, 2009. Haley and two roommates were inside at the time.

The roommates told deputies that the men knocked, then barged their way in. Seconds later, the roommates said, the men shot Haley and fled. Haley, who was 28 at the time, died at the scene.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said in 2018 they received new information that led them to suspect Robins and Schwartz in the killing. The case went to a grand jury, and Schwartz and Robins were indicted.

Both men are being held without bail in the Clackamas County Jail. Neither has entered a plea, and a hearing for the two is scheduled for March.
