As a 40-year resident of east Vancouver, I have seen a lot of change along one of the main thoroughfares of east Vancouver. McGillivray Boulevard has become a busy street, especially for bicyclists. As I read the Jan. 4 article, I think of how many cyclists do not obey the rules of the road — mainly stopping for the stop signs, as car drivers must do.
The article quotes a bicyclist club publicist as saying “Our club’s number one priority is safety.” I have personally seen, on a Saturday morning, a group of 10 to 20 bikers “glide” through stop signs (plural). I never pull out onto the street until I am sure the bicyclist will stop for a four-way stop sign, as few do. They just slow down and coast through the intersection. Bicyclists must obey the rules of the road or risk being hit. We are not in Oregon, where a new law effective Jan. 1 says bicyclists are exempt from stopping at stop signs and lights.
