Letter: Seven ways to fix democracy

By Howard Meharg, Vancouver
Published: January 17, 2020, 6:00am

These are issues we must control or our democracy is doomed:

1. Uncontrolled money going into electing candidates at all levels, especially at the national level. We must have a level playing field, one that prevents the richest donors from dominating advertising.

2. Money through lobbyists going to House and Senate members.

3. A tax system skewed so that large corporations and the ultra-wealthy are not forced to pay their fair share.

4. Gerrymandered congressional districts that virtually guarantee the election of candidates from one party over another.

5. An antiquated Electoral College system which destroys the equality of votes from one area over another.

6. Failure to deal with global climate issues may doom more than our democracy. It’s even bigger than that.

7. Failure to deal with the unfathomable losses in military spending, and fraud in our health care systems.

A candidate for president who seems willing to deal with these issues, even if their plan seems “far out” to you, could well be the direction to go with your vote.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
