Opening Exhibit

“The Lost Ark of African American Art, History & Experience in Vancouver and the Northwest,” on display through February, is hosted by the NAACP in honor of Black History Month. The kickoff celebration is from noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 25, at Vancouver Community Library, 901 C Street. The exhibit features original art and artifacts and the free celebration includes presentations by Vancouver’s First Families and the Buffalo Soldiers, panel discussions and live entertainment. www.naacpvancouverwa.org or www.fvrl.org/loc/va

Continuing exhibits

“Narratives & Metaphors” through Feb. 1 with an artist’s reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 25 featuring wine, sparkling cider and chocolate. This exhibit features the works of David Carmack Lewis, a muralist whose art explores imagery of the American West through a lens of magic realism to tell both true stories and tall tales. Mass Residue, through January. This exhibit features the talents of Calico Randall, Crystal Cortez, Hannah Piper Burns, Helen Spencer-Wallace, Loulou Fernandez, Fernanda D’Agostino, Sandy Sampson, Sarah Turner, Tara Murino Braul and Vika Ayers, whose works blur the lines between domestic and digital technology. Using microcontrollers, the artists have converted the gallery into an environment which changes sonically, visually and physically in response to visitors. Art at the CAVE Gallery, 108 E. “Whispers in the Wind,” through January. This exhibit features 12-inch squares of fiber art by members of the quilting group Vagabonds, including Ada Levins, Joanne Adams Roth, Wilma Fletcher Scott, Audrey Prothero, Karan Brooks, Sharry Olmstead, Lynn Czaban, Beverly Woodard and Val Pellens. Artist Group Show, through January. An exhibit featuring a variety of work by the gallery’s artists, including photography, watercolor, acrylic, fused glass, and other mediums. “Kevin Peters: Redefining Past and Present,” through Feb. 15, features art by Nez Perce artist Kevin Peters. His most coveted pieces are traditional works such as quilts, headdresses, and buckskin and rawhide items. His works honor past artists while reflecting contemporary Nez Perce culture. “Twist,” through Feb. 28. This exhibit features the work of Sherry Saele and Krista Anara Cibis, tweaking traditional forms of fiber arts and using techniques such as weaving, needle point, jewelry making, and other processes that cross back and forth from craft to art to practical handiwork. “In Stillness and Motion; Containment of the Aesthetic,” through March 23. This exhibit features the work of Megan Eckman and Alder Suttles. Eckman’s “Flatteringly Flat” series revels in the aesthetic interplay of pattern on pattern. Suttles’ work centers on water imagery and poolside scenes.
