A frustrating summer of near misses continued for Vancouver golfer Alistair Docherty on Friday.

Docherty, a 2012 Union High School, missed the cut by one shot Friday at the Korn Ferry Tour TPC San Antonio Challenge at the Canyons.

Docherty, 26, improved upon his first-round score by shooting a 2-under 70 on Friday, leaving him at 3-under for the tournament.

The Korn Ferry Tour is the qualifying tour for the PGA Tour.

When he walked off the course in the early afternoon, he was tied for 53rd place above the projected cutline.

The cutline then waffled between 3-under and 4-under as more golfers finished their rounds before finally settling at 4-under. The top 65 golfers plus ties make the cut in Korn Ferry events. Docherty finished tied for 68th.

Docherty’s round on Friday included five birdies, one bogey and a double-bogey.

He was 3-under for the round — 4-under for the tournament — after 12 holes Friday before his double bogey on the par-3 No. 13 hole dropped him to 1-under. He birdied No. 15 to get back to 2-under for the round, 3-under for the tournament.

After failing to qualify for the first four Korn Ferry events since the resumption of the season in June, Docherty considered giving up his pursuit of qualifying for future tour events because of the cost and stress.

But he decided last weekend to make one more attempt this week, driving in one day from Scottsdale, Ariz., to San Antonio. He considered sleeping in his car to save money before receiving some help from friends to stay at a motel.

He then shared medalist honors in Monday’s qualifying round to reach this week’s field of 156 golfers in San Antonio.

Docherty has a couple of days to decide what to do next. The next event in the Korn Ferry Tour is also in San Antonio next week.
