HUDSON’S BAY — Special Olympics Washington held its first-ever Virtual Law Enforcement Torch Run on June 6 and included two Clark County agencies: Vancouver Police Department and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. The annual fundraising event went online this year because of the pandemic. The Vancouver Police Department included 12 members on the run and raised $775, while the Clark County Sheriff’s Office had 32 runners and raised $2,084, according to the Special Olympics Washington website. The sheriff’s office came in eighth for teams that raised the most money, with the Kelso Police Department placing first. Vancouver Police was 19th. More than 550 participants moved together for 20 minutes and 20 seconds, with the goal to raise funds to deliver sports and health programming to more than 19,500 Special Olympics Washington athletes. Traditionally, the Torch Run was held in person with hundreds of law enforcement representatives carrying the “Flame of Hope” to the annual state spring games, which were canceled.
