Letter: Warming Arctic is danger to all

The Arctic is burning. We humans can’t even figure out how to treat each other with respect and dignity, so it is no surprise that we are having the same problem with our mother Earth. Those of us in Southwest Washington experienced a pretty mild June, but this does not mean that global warming has stopped. Within the Arctic circle, areas where you could once snowmobile in June just hit 88 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Arctic region is warming twice as fast as the rest of the globe.

Maybe you think, “Why do I care if the Arctic melts?” If only for selfish reasons, you should actually care a lot. A white Arctic reflects the sun’s rays back into space, whereas a melted Arctic absorbs that energy as heat. This is the first way that a warmer Arctic impacts everyone. As that area warms, its permafrost layer thaws which releases copious amounts of greenhouse gases, including the powerful methane which will further warm our planet.

Our actions (how much and what we drive, what we eat, what we buy) impact the planet and each other. The city needs to adopt a climate action plan ASAP.
