Letter: Move on from fossil fuels

I support Vancouver’s moratorium against new bulk fossil fuel facilities.

We are at risk of having long trains full of liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas unload their cargo in Vancouver to be stored for export. Trains derail.

Six years ago, a LNG storage facility exploded in Plymouth. The employees were not protected, their cars were bombed out in the parking lot and the public was kept in the dark. Do an internet search for “LNG explosion in Plymouth Washington” and see for yourself.

The gas industry is the master of greenwashing. When they say their product burns cleaner, they forget to tell us about their mess in the fracking fields, the methane leaks from pipelines, and the fact that on some days, the air in natural gas heated homes is so bad, it would be illegal if outside.

They talk about providing renewable gas in the future, but that is wishful thinking. It will never be possible to fill half the existing pipes with renewable gas, and yet the industry is installing more pipe all over the county.

The safer and healthier alternative is the all-electric heat pump, for water and space heating.
