Letter: Protect students, teachers

Donald Trump, his rubber-stamp right-wing cabinet members and Fox News are all crying about the harm keeping children out of school will cause.

Lack of structure, no social connections, not being taught by certified teachers and isolation. I remind you that the conservatives, and especially the Christian conservatives, were the ones championing home schooling.

School districts have set up online education by certified and college educated teachers, more highly qualified than most “Mom” at-home teachers and more qualified than the teacher aides found in great numbers in private schools.

We know that schools are breeding grounds for infections. Young children cannot be expected to maintain the hygiene of an adult (and many of those are doing a poor job) — if we sicken or kill millions of teachers, how will you replace them?

The bottom line is that this push to reopen schools is the same insanity as reopening the country without control of the virus. This is simply Republicans trying to jump-start the economy — fuel the stock market and whistle while walking through the graveyard as over 100,000 die and millions are critically sick.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
