PORTLAND — Three people were killed in Portland on Friday and a man has been arrested on murder charges, police said Monday.

Brett Pruett, 58, faces murder charges in the deaths of 40-year-old Tashia Cobb, 77-year-old Lawrence Murphy and 45-year-old Elmer Hughes, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Portland police didn’t notify the public of the incident until Monday, three days after the killings happened and after officers arrested Pruett. Police have not explained the delay.

Police on Monday released few details. Officers said they found the three people dead at 10 p.m. when they arrived at a home in the northeast part of the city. Court records from 2019 list Pruett’s address on the same block, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported.

Police said officers arrested Pruett over the weekend. He’s being held without bail in Multnomah County Jail. It wasn’t immediately known if he has a lawyer.

Court documents say Pruett has been convicted of 13 felonies and had a warrant for his arrest in San Diego. He also escaped from jail in California in 1984, according to state documents.

Pruett is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, one count of burglary and one count of assault with a firearm.

Prosecutors said some of the charges are linked to the assault of a woman on Thursday.
