C-Tran to resume fares, front-door boarding

C-Tran will resume fare collection and front-door boarding on all of its fixed-route buses starting Sunday.

Rear-door boarding will still be allowed on the Vine. Vine riders prepay at the station platform and can then board at either door on the line’s extended-length buses.

The number of passengers per bus will still be limited in order to combat the spread of COVID-19, the transit agency announced Monday, and riders will still be asked to wait for the next bus if one arrives too full. Passengers on all buses will still be asked to exit via the rear door when possible.

C-Tran instituted rear-door boarding in late March to help protect bus operators during the pandemic. Riders were asked to board and exit from the rear door and stay in the middle or back of the bus unless they needed access to the front door ramp or the priority seating area.

The policy made fare collection impractical because the fare boxes are located by the front door on regular-size C-Tran buses.
