Kelso and Camas earned top-5 finishes in their respective classifications as the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced its Scholastic Cup winners for 2019-20.

The Scholastic Cup measures schools’ extracurricular programs based on state championship performances, academic achievement and sportsmanship.

Because of the cancelation of the spring season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s winners were based on points accumulated in the fall and winter.

Central Valley easily outdistanced Woodinville (1,015 points to 840) to win the 4A Scholastic Cup. Camas (655) was fifth and Union was (410) 11th.

Mount Spokane also easily outdistanced Bellevue (1,200-896) to win the 3A Scholastic Cup. Kelso, the lone Southwest Washington school in the top 20, placed third with 675 points.

Sehome edged Sammamish (865-839) to win the 2A Scholastic Cup. Columbia River placed eighth (457), Hockinson was 12th (395) and Washougal was 13th (387).

Private schools filled five of the top six spots in Class 1A, led by King’s (965) and Lynden Christian (890). Seton Catholic was the lone local school in the top 15 at sixth (505).

NEW AD AT R.A. LONG: DeWayne McCabe will replace Trevor Person as the athletic director at R.A. Long High School starting the 2020-21 school year.

Person, the former boys basketball coach at Hockinson, served as R.A. Long athletic director since the 2017-18 school year. He is returned to Clark County to take an administrative position with Evergreen Public Schools.

McCabe, a social studies teacher at R.A. Long, has previous experience coaching high school football and middle school track and field.

RENNER SIGNS WITH HAWAII PACIFIC: Prairie golfer and volleyball player Amelia Renner, featured in The Columbian on April 12, has signed a letter of intent to play golf at Hawaii Pacific.

Renner, who was recovering from a traumatic knee injury last volleyball season, had been considering an offer to play volleyball and golf for an NAIA school in Kansas. But she said when Hawaii Pacific’s offer to play golf came, “I could not turn (it) down.”
