Weather Eye: Expect typical May weather: 60s, showers, sun

It felt much better weather-wise Monday with cooler temperatures, although you may have felt the increased humidity. As I write this column there are a few sprinkles or light showers moving northward into Clark County.

Good timing if you just planted the garden. Rainfall amounts between today and Thursday may be around a quarter of an inch and, of course, if heavy showers develop, a bit more like half an inch or more.

Next Mother’s Day we will remember this year and the record high temperatures. Vancouver reached 87 degrees Sunday breaking the old record of 85 degrees set in 1987. No worry about more record highs for a while. We settle in for highs in the 60s and about 70 or so Friday when it will be dry.

Looking ahead to the weekend, it will be just the opposite of last weeked, with clouds and showers as a low pressure system settles over us. At least that’s the plan, always subject to change. It would have been the weekend of the Hazel Dell parade when it rarely rains, hmm.

So, all in all, pretty typical weather for May I would say. Scattered showers, some sun breaks and highs close to average, which is 67 degrees. We certainly can’t complain and my inbox should remain empty.

The change will be good to temper fire danger, settle the dust and give thirsty trees and plants a drink. Hopefully it won’t drag on for an extended period of time and the sun reappears in time for the long Memorial Day weekend.

I checked my rain gauge yesterday, good thing, a spider had gone crazy weaving a nice web across the brim of the rain bucket. Now that is taken care of, I’m ready for rain, at least to measure it.
