Letter: Heights plan concerning

By Greg Ritter, Vancouver

MacArthur Boulevard and other roads are a concern in the Heights District Plan. The city is removing medians and crowding parking and traffic next to the schools on MacArthur Boulevard. How safe will it be to load and unload students from school buses?

The city also proposes to narrow Andresen Road south of Mill Plain from four lanes to two smaller lanes and to occasionally block off parts of Devine for events. Most of these changes are adding more bike lanes, sidewalks, and tree space, yet they are cramming people into higher buildings. We are concerned that neighborhoods will be filled with parked cars and traffic on narrow streets when big events are scheduled. We have seen the affects of events in Portland neighborhoods. You may think that the city’s plan does not affect you, but it does, if you drive any of these streets, including Mill Plain.

The city has allowed an extension on the Draft EIS comments to May 20, 2020, and allowed some churches not to be rezoned, for which we are thankful. Due the COVID-19 virus, we cannot go to public meetings to state our concerns in person, so we are writing to the editor.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
