Letter: Extend Tower Mall time line

We have lived in the Heights area for over 49 years. We love the neighborhood and have serious concerns about some of the plans being reviewed for the Tower Mall redevelopment project. An issue that really troubles us is the May 20 deadline for public comments on the Tower Mall Draft Environmental Impact, or EIS, to be heard. Many of us members of the Heights District Coalition have sent letters to the city council and city manager asking for an extension of the EIS because we are unable to voice our concerns in person due to COVID-19 epidemic. We believe the city council acted correctly in postponing the decision on parking/bicycle changes to Columbia Street for one year. We feel the Tower Mall EIS decision should also be postponed for at least one year. Quite frankly, even if the EIS is approved, the city would be hard pressed to find the funds to proceed with the project. We urge the city council and city manager to take the correct action and postpone any decision on the Tower Mall EIS for at least one year.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
