Letter: Respect my rights, too

Diane Child stated that our risk of death from COVID-19 in Clark County is now extremely low (“Let citizens decide the risks,” Our Readers’ Views, May 13). While we sacrificed our freedoms to fight the virus, the low risk of death she mentions is because we did. Ms. Child says that we are intelligent enough to decide how to live our lives and how to mitigate the risk of infection. She goes on to say that our basic constitutional rights are being denied by politicians.

I beg to differ. I am a healthy 80-year-old who exercises every day and has no co-morbidities. I go to the grocery store early in the day during the times designated for older folks. During the last three weeks, I have seen more and more shoppers not wearing masks. If, as she says, we are intelligent enough to mitigate the risk of infection, then we would all wear masks. My constitutional rights are being violated not by the politicians but by the so-called intelligent citizens of Clark County who believe it is OK not to wear masks and put all of us at risk.

I suggest she read the lead off letter from Ken Simpson that is titled, “Don’t let history repeat itself.”
