Letter: Rights and responsibilities

By David R. Kooken, Sherwood, Ore.

In the USA we have rights, but with each comes responsibilities that have legal and economic consequences. We have free speech, but we may not shout “fire” in a crowded building. We have the right to consume alcohol, but laws govern our conduct after drinking. We have the right to our religious beliefs but may not impose ours on a captive audience.

Rights and responsibilities are spelled out in our legal system. It is on track for the courts to decide whether you have a right to not wear a mask but if that is your choice, and you are an unknowing COVID-19 carrier, are you prepared to accept the legal and economic consequences of your decision?

Probably not, if you will not agree to protect others.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
